How Many Lottery Tickets Should You Actually Buy?

Published

"More tickets, more chance" — mathematically true, but it hides the real question: how much extra winning probability do you get per extra €1? Answer: almost always less than you think.

1. The Marginal Odds Curve

EuroJackpot's jackpot odds are 1 in 95,344,200. That means:

  • 1 ticket → 1 / 95,344,200 ≈ 0.0000010%
  • 10 tickets → 10 / 95,344,200 ≈ 0.0000105%
  • 100 tickets → 100 / 95,344,200 ≈ 0.000105%

The curve is linear and nearly flat. Ten tickets give ten times the chance of one — but that chance stays microscopic. Only at hundreds of thousands of tickets does jackpot probability become meaningful, and at that scale your net EV loss is enormous.

2. The EV Budget Rule

Instead of "how many tickets," ask: what's my maximum expected loss per week?

  • Say your lottery entertainment budget is €5/week.
  • EuroJackpot EV ≈ €0.40 per €2 ticket → you lose €0.60 per ticket = €1.50/week at 2.5 tickets.
  • 10 tickets/week (€20) → expected loss €6/week — four times your budget.

More tickets ≠ smarter play. Smarter is maximizing EV per ticket (see EV explainer) and keeping ticket count inside your entertainment budget.

3. Syndicate Theory

Syndicates (pools) are the only way to cover meaningfully more tickets without blowing your budget:

  • 20 people × €5 = €100 per draw = 50 EuroJackpot tickets
  • Win probability 50× higher
  • But prize is split 20 ways → net profit per person is the same

Syndicates improve frequency of small wins, not expected return. They're valuable for fun and social experience — not for mathematical edge.

4. When More Tickets Is Smart

One scenario: cap weeks with rollover EV above €0.80 per €1. At a €120M EuroJackpot (see cap strategy) EV can briefly look positive. Then a bigger ticket block can be defensible — provided split-risk stays low.

For 95% of weeks: 1–3 tickets per draw is optimal.

5. The 5-Minute Decision Rule

  1. Set a fixed weekly budget (€2–€10 typical).
  2. Check the EV leaderboard and pick top-1 or -2.
  3. Buy 1 ticket per chosen lottery, max 3 total.
  4. Consider a syndicate only for fun, not for EV.
  5. Raise ticket count only when EV > €0.80/€1 (rare).

This beats 95% of players who buy "a handful" without a plan.
